Emergency Unemployment Benefits: Compromise in the Senate

A bipartisan plan has been laid out to extend emergency unemployment benefits for five months, according to a press release made public by Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI).

With a crucial amount of Republican support, the legislation will likely be approved by the Senate, which is expected to vote on the bill during the week of March 24. The following Republicans have joined Democrats to support the bill: Dean Heller (D-NV), Susan Collins (R-ME), Rob Portman (R-OH), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Mark Kirk (R-IL). If you are from these states, please thank them.

As a part of the Senate compromise, the unemployment insurance program will be extended in exchange for cost savings and policy changes elsewhere, which pay for the approximately $10 billion in unemployment benefits:

The Senate deal came as a surprise to some in Washington, with The Washington Post reporting “Unemployment insurance is back from the dead”. In reality, there was always at least one group of people for whom the unemployment extension demand never “died” – the hard-pressed Americans hurt by the expiration of this vital program, as well as their families and communities.

Advocates for extending emergency unemployment benefits have been engaged, persistent, and active. But this is only half the battle. It is unclear whether House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) will allow a retroactive extension of emergency unemployment benefits. Stick with this and keep the pressure on.

The following are resources to make sure politicians continue to hear your voice on emergency unemployment compensation (EUC):

  • Enter your zip code here, and you’ll be directed to a letter put together by the Half in Ten campaign urging your representative to support the unemployment extension when the issue comes up in the House.
  • Call your representative using this number, provided by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME): 877-363-6141.

This blog serves many purposes: 1) People to share their personal stories 2) Give moral support to one another 3) Sharing of ideas 4) Work together to get EUC benefits passed! We (the EUC family) have been working non-stop for nearly a month to get the EUC passed by: 1). Making hundreds of phone calls, sending emails, and faxes to our politicians. 2) Calling, and emailing dozens of news media to ask them for their help and share our stories to keep EUC in the media. 3). Contacting politicians and other EUC victims via Facebook, Twitter, and blogs to let them know about us and our plight. 4). Signing every petition available and spreading the word for others to do so! We want people to "get" out as much as they "give" from these articles and blogs. However, if anyone feels they are not getting anything out of these blogs and/or they are not willing to "give of themselves" than they are free to leave!
Thank you Union and Betrayed! True TEAM members. Come with your "kick-butt" attitude tomorrow! I'm imaging a scene from Braveheart! Night!
BETRAYED. SAME TO YOU. GOOD NIGHT TO ALL
EVERYBODY should be signing the above petition. We need all of your signatures...sign it now. Secondly, can we get a list of republicans in the House so we can email them NOW, so they will get them when they come bsck from their vacation? I can get the list myself. But it would be helpful to everybody coming to this site that they see it easily. Don't just email your state,'s House representative, email all republican House Representatives.
Hi Diane! I have been working on the ominous House list! I will try to have it here by tomorrow afternoon. I've researched the most stubborn House of Representatives Republicans! I've included those states that have historically not voted for EUC benefits in the past. I also wanted to include the states where the Senate Republicans did not vote for EUC the last 3 votes since 12/13. Please continue to call the Senate list (because they have to still vote when they get back). Also, get people to sign the petitions and gathering here by going on Senator's Facebook pages!

Congratulations, 2 million so-called long-term unemployed. You are more selfish than Congress and are willing to throw the entire working class under the bus for a few pennies to get you through to summer. That is not a small feat.
