DHS Extends Comment Period through August 16 for Environmental Directive

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reopened its comment period for its draft directive containing policy and procedures for implementing the National Environmental Policy Act, after several public interest groups requested an extension. The new deadline for comments is August 16. The proposal seeks to hide Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), partially or wholely, from public disclosure for security reasons, according to DHS. For more information on DHS's directive, read OMB Watch's article "DHS Seeks Exemptions From Public Disclosure Requirements", which makes the case that withholding information has little to do with security. For information about the extension notice, draft directive, and public comments already submitted, see DHS's website.
