Veterans Groups Oppose Sunsets
by Guest Blogger, 7/26/2006
Opposition to sunset commission legislation advanced considerably with the decision by veterans services organizations to oppose sunset bills.
Veterans groups are expressing concerns that sunset commissions will still harm veterans, even if the VA as a whole could be politically immune from being terminated by a sunset commission. For example, the Vietnam Veterans of America explain, "While veterans’ programs may not be specifically targeted, there is every indication that they would be adversely affected should a sunset commission become law. Given the events of the last few years, it is clear to us that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment and compensation programs would be among the first to be targeted, along with special programs at VA for blinded veterans, those with traumatic brain injuries, and any program that addresses toxic exposures, such as Agent Orange or Gulf War Illness."
Here is a look at the latest letters from VSOs.
